There’s No Place Like Home

Written by Pat Elsberry

Our true home, our eternal dwelling, is in Heaven, where Jesus resides.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 30, 2024

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:20-21

One of the things our family cherishes is the joy of returning home after a journey. This sentiment may stem from the fact that my husband and I each had long careers with Delta Air Lines, which allowed us to travel to many cities and countries worldwide. Our favorite place to visit is Italy. It almost doesn’t matter where in Italy – we just love the country, the people, and yes, the food! Yet as much as we love it there, when we return home, we always sound a little like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz as we look at one another and whisper, “There’s no place like home.”

Dorothy’s story resonates with many of us, as we all long for that place we can call home, where we belong and fit in. If only it were as simple as clicking our heels in ruby red slippers. Many people, like Dorothy, yearn for home, but they don’t know how to find it.

C.S. Lewis says: “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

As children of God, we carry within us a deep longing, a knowing that this world is not our ultimate home. Our true home, our eternal dwelling, is in Heaven, where Jesus resides. In John 14:2, we find reassurance in Jesus’ words to his disciples: “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I’m going there to prepare a place for you?” This promise of a future home in Heaven is a beacon of hope that guides us through our earthly journey.

Until Jesus returns and takes us to our forever home, as long as we keep Him at the center of our lives, we can feel at home wherever we are.

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.” (Revelation 22:1-5)

Prayer

Jesus, it’s in you and with you where we truly find our home. Wherever you are is where I long to be.
