“The more often we elevate our love for God the higher our desire to walk with God.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 7, 2022
Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. Genesis 5:24
Walking has been around from the beginning of creation, “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden” (Genesis 3:8). Instead of choosing to walk with God in paradise, stricken by shame from disobedience, Adam and Eve hid from Him. Fast forward to today, the times in my life I need the Lord the most, are the times I need to walk with Him…not hide. The more I elevate my love for God the higher my desire to walk with Him.
Wisely, Enoch learned from his legacy of faithfulness, his dad Jared, and back several generations to Seth, who walked with God. Perhaps Seth learned what not to do by observing the disobedience of his dad Adam and his brother Cain. Seth shifted his family’s generational faith experience from running from God to walking with God. Amen! A bold man of God chose faithfulness over fear. Forgiveness over jealously, anger, bitterness and murder. Wisdom indeed! Enoch embraced the lives of those in his genealogical line who loved and walked with the Lord.
As the proverb teaches, “Walk with the wise and become wise” (Proverbs 13:20).
I have to ask myself as a grandparent and parent am I modeling Adam, Cain or Enoch? What does it mean and what does it look like to walk with the Lord? Fortunately, Jesus modeled the way for us—He constantly checked in with His Father to make sure they were on the same page. Jesus walked, always aware of His Father’s presence. For believers today, being aware of the presence of the Holy Trinity is sobering and reassuring. Sobering, since perfect love is 100% accessible, 100% of the time—and with eternal eyes, we are able to be aware and engaged. Walking faithfully with God, experiences God. Rarely novel walks, but typical normal everyday life. And, gratefully…always accompanied by the resurrection power and intimate love of Jesus.
Oswald Chambers, wisely highlights the challenges associated in staying faithful with your walk with the Lord, “It is painful work to get in step with God and to keep pace with Him— it means getting your second wind spiritually. In learning to walk with God, there is always the difficulty of getting into His stride, but once we have done so, the only characteristic that exhibits itself is the very life of God Himself. The individual person is merged into a personal oneness with God, and God’s stride and His power alone are exhibited”. Whether a leisurely stroll or an arduous hike, keep in stride with your Savior. Trust the Spirit to lead and one day, He will take you away!
“Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days” (Deuteronomy 5:33).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me joyfully walk faithfully with you on the smooth paths and up the rocky trails, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
What road is the Lord asking you to walk with Him that seems rocky and uncertain? What does it look like to walk faithfully with God throughout your life?
