We Wrestle Not Against Flesh and Blood

Written by Shana Schutte

You wrestle what you can’t see.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 14, 2025

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.  Ephesians 6:12

Have you ever wished that your spiritual, emotional, and physical battles in life were non-existent or not as difficult?

That’s understandable. Most believers have felt that way.

Here are some points from Ephesians 6:12 to help equip you and give you strength when circumstances are tossing you to and fro and beating you up.

There’s a spiritual realm we can’t see. Many believers live only by what they can see, hear, or feel. This perspective causes us to miss a reality that is beyond the veil in which we need to battle and wrestle.

We are called to wrestle. We are called to wrestle against this spiritual realm we can’t see. Wrestle means that life isn’t a cake walk. It doesn’t mean we should take a passive approach in our battle. Instead, Jesus calls us to become warriors — warriors for the Kingdom and warriors for Jesus’ glory.

Our wrestling is not wrestling against people. When we experience conflict, sometimes we can become so spiritually or emotionally incensed that we miss that we are not battling against people. We are battling against the unseen realm that we can’t see. Instead, we often battle against humans who have been taken captive into Satan’s will in the same way Jesus told Peter “Get behind me Satan!” Or Job’s wife, who was taken captive to do Satan’s work when she told Job to curse God and die.

The unseen realm is highly organized. In the same way that God’s angels and government in the world can’t be seen, the evil world we can’t see is highly organized. The lies that are thrown at us are highly organized and perfectly timed. We need to pay attention to when and where attacks happen.

We do ourselves a disservice when we get discouraged and wonder why we struggle in life. We wonder why things are hard and why we wrestle. We wonder why we feel life should be easy. But this passage reminds us that we must wrestle. We are to call ourselves warriors.

We wrestle and the Lord has equipped us to be overcomers.

“…to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18).

Prayer

Lord, thank you for making me aware of what I can’t see and making me a warrior for you. Amen.
