“Our time on this earth is but a fleeting moment. The love and kindness we sow, the legacy we build in Heaven, will endure for eternity.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 4, 2024
A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous. Proverbs 13:22
Today would have been my father’s 105th birthday. As I reflect on this milestone, I’m reminded of his words, “It’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years that counts.” This sentiment has guided my journey, prompting me to ponder the legacy I’m crafting. Have you taken a moment to consider the legacy you’ll leave behind?
Imagine for a moment how people will remember you? What would you want others to say about you at your Celebration of Life service? Would you want them to speak of your kindness, care, and compassion? Or perhaps you would prefer to be remembered for your generosity, morality, and thoughtfulness? Consider the impact of your actions on others, and strive to leave a positive legacy.
When I think of my Heavenly Father and the legacy he left behind for us all, the first thing that comes to mind is total love and sacrifice. He didn’t leave a legacy of money, power, or personal property. Instead, he left a legacy of loving God completely and sacrificially loving us. Beyond that unselfish act, he was the most loving person to ever walk this earth, as he truly loved the unlovely. Would you sacrifice your life for a total stranger? I know I would lay down my life for my children or my husband, but would I do so for strangers who, by all accounts, were undeserving and hated me?
Our time on this earth is but a fleeting moment. The material possessions we hold dear will all fade away, but the love and kindness we sow, the legacy we build in Heaven, will endure for eternity.
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Prayer
Jesus, help me to remain mindful of how you want me to live my life so when I am no longer here, my legacy will be one that reflects my love, commitment and service to you.
Application
What actions can you take today to shape the legacy you want to leave behind?
