Wherever You Are, There He Is

Written by Shana Schutte

God is always at work.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 1, 2022

But will God indeed dwell with mankind on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You; how much less this house which I have built! 2 Chronicles 6:18.

When I was entering college, like most young people, I wanted to know why I was here. I wanted to know why God created me. This desire only increased and intensified as I graduated and entered the working force. I felt like I was a square peg trying to fit into a world of round holes. I wanted a straight path from where I was to my purpose, or what God wanted me to do with my life.

One day I attended a church service and the preacher said something that stuck with me and made a big impression on my heart: “God loves you and He has a wonderful plan for your life!”

That was it! God had a plan for my life! Now, if I could only discover that plan, the internal striving and feelings of being a misfit would cease. I also believed that if I could discover the exact plan the pastor spoke of, that I would experience a straight path from where I was (confused and directionless) to where I wanted to be (an easy life with clear direction). At that moment, I felt I wasn’t experiencing God’s plan, but that I could experience it—if I could only discover it.

What I didn’t comprehend at the time is that God’s plan wasn’t “out there somewhere” in the future for me to discover. It was now. It was in the present. Because, as my son-in-law says, “Wherever you are, there God is.”

Indeed. He never leaves. He is always present and always working in our lives. His plan is not just for the future. It’s for now too.

God’s plan for Joseph wasn’t at work just when he was Pharaoh’s right hand man, but also when he was in prison awaiting his release. Because, wherever you are, there God is—and He is always at work.

God’s plan for Esther wasn’t at work just when she was a queen, but also when she was growing up under the care of her uncle, Mordecai. Because, wherever you are, there God is—and He is always at work.

God’s plan for Moses wasn’t at work just when he was leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, but also when he was hiding on the backside of the desert. Because, wherever you are, there God is—and He is always at work.

God’s plan is constant and unfolding. It’s for now. It’s for tomorrow. It’s for next week, next year and the years to come.

When we remember God is always at work, we will be able to rest in the Lord’s sovereign love and care, knowing that His plan is always for our good and His glory. He is always at work to make us into who He has created us to be through the easy times, the hard times, the times that make us laugh and the times that make us cry.

Wherever you are, there God is—always at work.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born, a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).

Prayer

Lord, thank you that you are always at work in my life. Your plan is at work in my life now, not just in the future. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
