“Do not let unresolved questions keep you from moving forward in faith.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 9, 2023
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” Mark 16:1-3, ESV
One of the hardest things for me to accept in life is incomplete information. When planning a trip, I need to not only know when a flight arrives and departs, but I need to have every detail of the agenda mapped out and planned: where to eat, how to get around, estimated costs, duration of time spent in each place, etc. The more detail, the better!
My wife, on the other hand, leads with her heart and is happy not to sweat the details. “Let’s just figure it out as we go,” she’ll say, which is the worst thing anyone can say to a planner like myself! Yet over the years, some of our greatest moments and experiences as a couple have come when we are willing to keep an open mind and simply go, stepping out and into a moment to see what it might hold. If left to myself, there are experiences I simply never would have had because the lack of knowledge would have kept me from ever taking a single step in that direction.
If she had been one of the early disciples of Christ, I’m confident my wife would have been in the mix with Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome. In Mark 16, these women are walking together to the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body with spices, as was the Jewish custom. I’ve read this story countless times, yet in reading it again I found myself drawn to their words in verse 3: “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” Here, we find an incomplete plan, a key detail that hadn’t been resolved and was beyond their ability to solve in and of themselves. And yet, and this is key, it didn’t keep them from going. They knew they were meant to be with Jesus, and so they went in faith, trusting that the details would fall into place, which of course they did in the most glorious of ways!
Similar to these first disciples, you and I are meant to be where Jesus is. Do not let unresolved questions keep you from moving forward in faith. Go to where he is, and trust that everything else will fall into place when we seek him with all our hearts.
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8, ESV)
Prayer
Father, may my questions or lack of clarity never keep me from moving closer to you and the life of your kingdom, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
What does it look like for you in this season to move forward in faith, even if you lack the clarity you deeply desire?
