You Have Been Set Free in Christ

Written by Shana Schutte

“Who is Jesus and who is He to me?”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 2, 2021

For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ Acts 17:28

This morning I’ve been thinking about how so many of life’s struggles could be lessened or eliminated if we truly knew who we are in Christ and who He is in us. Freedom comes from being aware of—and fully convinced of—His identity and ours.

Being convinced of who Christ is means knowing He is the great I AM, that there is no God more powerful than He and He is the one true God.

It means knowing He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

It means knowing He is the Lord who provides, who is our faithful Shepherd, and our Healer.

It means believing He is our peace, our ever-present Lord, the God who always sees us, the One who is our righteousness, and who loves us with a fierce, jealous, protective love.

The great news is that He is in us and we are in Him. We are His creation, a part of His loving heart because that which is created is always a part of the one who creates.

All that comes from Him is part of Him. Indeed, we live and move and have our being in him! There is no getting away from Him because all He has made is held in Him.

How many times in my life have I gotten my eyes off who Jesus is and who He is to me? I have forgotten—or haven’t known His identity—so I haven’t understood mine either. In these seasons I have become tired, stressed, anxious, and fearful.

Our ability to understand who He is and who we are to Him affects every aspect of our lives. It affects how we see ourselves and how we believe we’re able to navigate heartbreak, disappointment, trials, and pain. Knowing who Jesus is and who we are to Him gives us courage to do life’s hard things. It gives us hope to stay the course when we’d rather give up, the humility to love when it’s not easy, and wisdom for our journey. Our identity is found in Him, and freedom is found in our true identity.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Prayer

Lord, you are compassionate, loving, kind, faithful, strong, and always present. You are my teacher, friend, and God. You love me with love that never fails and a compassion that never ends regardless of what I do. You are my Jesus. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
