Your Face Lord Will I Seek

Written by Tripp Prince

To seek after the Lord is an invitation that we are free to accept or refuse.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 24, 2025

You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.” Psalm 27:8, ESV

I recently completed the book Beginning to Pray by Anthony Bloom, which I found to be one of the best books on prayer that I have ever read. Bloom finishes the book with a single sentence that has been on my heart and mind ever since I read it. He closes by encouraging his readers to search for a personal name for God, one that moves our search for the Lord from an anonymous and generic understanding of God to one that is intimate and personal. To this end, he says, “Search for a name, and if you have no name, do not be surprised that no one hears you: you are not calling.”

These are words that are meant to convict and challenge us in the core of our beings. Do we truly call out for the Lord? Do we seek after him with a longing and desire to be in relationship with him, or do we actually prefer the nameless and faceless God that we keep at a safe distance?

More often than I care to admit, I find myself rushing from one thing to the next, filling my days with meetings, events, distractions, and mindless entertainment, all of which may help me pass my days, but also serve to keep me unaware of what’s truly going on in my heart, and unaware of the presence of God that can only be encountered when I am at peace with myself and comfortable with silence.

The Lord promises that if we seek after him, we will find him. And as beautiful and true as this promise is, it is a promise that asks something of us. Yes, in truth it demands that we take a courageous and bold step toward him, for the Lord does not force himself upon us against our will. To seek after the Lord is an invitation that we are free to accept or refuse. And so today let us ask ourselves a deeply personal and vulnerable question, yet one that is required of us if we are ever to truly know the Lord and encounter him in the deepest places of our hearts: am I really seeking after him?

Prayer

Father, give us the strength and courage to take a step toward you, seeking after you with all our hearts and minds, that we may know you as you long to be known, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Application

Seek to tune your heart to the presence of God in your life today, saying a simple prayer throughout your day, such as, “Here I am, Lord.”
